Commercial sourcing scope
All-dielectric self-supporting cable must be selected as part of an aerial system. Span length alone is insufficient: sag, allowable tension, wind, ice, temperature, route clearance, support hardware and the electric-field environment affect the design.
Provide ruling or design span, maximum span, installation and final sag requirements, climatic loading, support elevations, fiber count, cable diameter constraints and required fittings. For power-line routes, identify the line voltage and proposed cable position so the electrical environment can be reviewed.
Specification and selection table
| Decision item | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Route geometry | Span schedule, elevations and required clearance |
| Climatic load | Wind, ice and temperature range |
| Mechanical design | Installation tension, everyday tension and safety factors |
| System components | Suspension, dead-end, vibration and down-lead hardware |
Standards and engineering interpretation
ITU-T L.87 provides guidance concerning optical cables for overhead high-voltage lines, including ADSS applications. IEC 60794 cable tests may also apply. The project engineer must select the relevant clauses, environmental cases and acceptance limits.
For broader technical context, review fiber optic cable construction and our quality-assurance method.
